France's average-speed radars on the routes that matter.
France measures your average speed between two points on a growing set of national roads, motorway stretches and tunnels. Unlike a single-point radar, a section radar cannot be outrun by braking once: the whole stretch counts.
A radar tronçon reads your plate at the entry gantry and again at the exit, then divides the distance by the time. Fixed radars in France are signposted by law, but a section stretch is only marked at its start — the exit point often arrives long after drivers have stopped thinking about it.
Autonomous radar vans operate unmanned. Locations change daily and are not publicly disclosed.
